He was tried at Exeter, Devon on 18 July 1785 for stealing a silver watch with a value of 25 shillings. He was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Charlotte aged about 27 at that time (May 1787). He had no occupation recorded.

Notes: Actual value of stolen goods was 60 shillings. Report from Dunkirk hulk was “troublesome at times”.Received 50 lashes in May 1790 for stealing lentils, and his rations cut from 3 to 2 pounds of flour for a week.“A very good Quite man” according to Lt Ralph Clark.
