The First Marriages

Sunday 10 February 1788 was the first Sunday after the women had been unloaded. On that day Reverend Richard Johnson baptised three children, a daughter of Samuel Bacon, marine and his wife Jane, and the sons of Catherine Prior and Sarah Bellamy.

There were also five weddings on that day. William Parr was married to Mary McCormack, Simon Burn to Francis Anderson, Henry Cable to Susannah Holmes, William Haynes to Hannah Green and William Bryant to Mary Braund.

While Lt Clark may have felt sure that some of these newly weds already had spouses in England, it also seems that three of the couples had formed their relationship whilst held in prison in England.
