Deborah ELLAM/ELIAS

She was tried at Chester, Cheshire on 13 August 1784 for stealing clothing with a value of 36 shillings. She was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Prince of Wales aged about 20 at that time (May 1787). She had no occupation recorded. She died in 1819.

Notes: Married John Herbert (Charlotte) on 2 April 1788 and had seven children.On 5 December 1788 she brought a complaint against her husband after a dispute. It was considered trivial and she received 25 lashes.She died “universally respected by her numerous friends and acquaintances.”
